A Profile of the Graduate

Graduates of the department of applied physics are capable of reasoning logically and expressing themselves with precision on diverse concepts in the field of physics. They can analyze and work in interdisciplinary groups to solve problems in science and technology applying mathematical and physical models. They can apply their knowledge to the solution of engineering problems, are capable of generating computer algorithms in advanced languages for the solution of engineering problems based on physics. They can propose and carry out research and development to generate innovative products, processes and services. Additionally, they are knowledgeable in the specialized fields of applied optics, the science of materials, opto-electronics, and alternative energy. Students must choose a specialization in one of these areas and take four electives in that area, allowing them to become more specialized in their field.

The Workplace

Graduates with a degree in applied physics can work in research centers, educational institutions, energy companies, manufacturing plants, the automotive industry, the petroleum and petrochemical industries and metal industries. They can apply their knowledge in the fields of electronic and optical communications, product design and engineering, process and materials engineering and medical equipment development. Additionally they can work as consultants in both the public and private sectors.
